This Co-Production Checklist is based on the steps of the research process from identifying a problem or issue to the dissemination and translation of the new knowledge.
Each step includes a series of statements and considerations that are relevant to co-production ranging from ‘Yes’ (supports co-production), to ‘Somewhat’, to ‘No’ (does not support coproduction).
This checklist is meant to invite self-reflection, promote co-production, and create collective research capacity. We acknowledge that at times, it might not be possible or appropriate to involve people with living and lived experience in all steps of the research process and at other times, their engagement might vary across the process.
However, if you tick ‘No’, we invite you to reflect on your decision and explore ways to engage meaningfully with people with living and lived experience. In other words, if you tick ‘No’, ask yourself ‘why not’?’
After you have completed the following checklist, you will find some strategies you may find helpful in your co-production journey. While this is not an exhaustive list, it proposes actions and invites ongoing reflection to consider what else could be done to strengthen your co-produced research activities.
Identifing an issue/a problem
Establishing the research team
Reviewing the literature
Developing the research question / formulating hypotheses
Preparing the research design
Ethics preparation and application
Preparing and conducting data collection
Analysing the data
Interpreting findings and report writing
Disseminating and translating findings / results
